How it

Sometimes people ask me how I can stand being a EMT, wth all the bad calls, and all the training to keep my certifaction up. A lot of the time its hard to give them a fair answer.

I could give them the usuall see through answer that they buy, the "Im doing it to serve my commuity," but what is the real reason we do this? Is it because we are all crazy? Is it because we have no life? Is it because we have too much time on our hands?

We dont do it for the money, because most cities garbagemen get paid better than almost all Paramedics. We dont do it for the glory, because theres a lot of times we dont get thanked. If we are not doing this for pay or glory, why are we doing it?

We see things that most people dont see. We see people in their worst moments, when they have done something real stupid, or other reasons.

We also reach out to them when other people dont want to. We go to the old lady's house down the street to take her somewhere, and we make her smile because we are smiling while we treat her. That just makes her day, when a stranger smiles and visits with her when her own family wont stop and visit her.

We bring life into the world, and we are also there when live passes from this world to the next. We see things that poeple choose not to see, and go places people dont want to go.

Some of us are volenteers, and work a regular job that lets us leave to go on calls. People wont recognise us on the street unless we are with the Ambulance or Fire Truck.

So, how do we do it? The only way that can be answered is by looking into our hearts and answering it apporately. Each person has their own answer, and each answer is different. And each answer is perfect in its own right.

this is...

this is my life.

i wake up, i go to work, i come home, i go to sleep. i do the same thing day in and day out. i answer the phone at work, i go everywhere for the service calls, i do everything. i work, and work, and work, and do i get a break? not really. my brothers can come and go as they please it seems, but there almost has to be an act of congress for me to have a day off.

im tires, im sore, i dislike my job, and am just not happy overall.

what its like

Until you are a Firefighter/EMT, you can never know what it’s like to be a Firefighter/EMT. Movies are not accurate; the news media does not cover it right. Being a Firefighter/EMT is more than being at the station for meetings. It is more than waiting for the tones to drop. It is a brotherhood. A brotherhood that reaches worldwide. One can never truly know the joy, the pain, the good times, the bad times, and the sorrow that is part of being a Firefighter/EMT unless they become a Firefighter/EMT. The things that you see that shock everyone else are things that are everyday things for us.  We go to places that are dirty, scary, down right nasty, and dangerous. We go into places that normal everyday people avoid going into. How many people do you know who would go into a building that is unsafe because there is someone hurt in that building? We go into buildings that are on fire. We go into buildings that have collapsed. We go into holes in the ground, and trenches also. We are contortionists. We can twist our way into wrecked cars and tight spaces.

You can see us on the street and not realize that we are a Firefighter/EMT. We go to the store, to the movies, to the beach just like everyone else. The only way you can tell is when the call comes in. We drop everything to go on the call. We may be in the middle of Christmas Dinner, or a family members birthday party, or even in the middle of sleeping.

Some of us are Full Time Firefighter/EMT’s, others are Volunteer Firefighter/EMT’s. Weather you are paid or volunteer, its more than just a job. It’s a calling. It’s in your heart, soul, and your blood.

smiles.

Smile

this came to me today after a conversation with a friend.

Smile when the day is long.
Smile when nothing goes your way.
Smile when it feels like everyone hates you.
Smile when nothing works right.
Smile when everyone else is frowning.
Smile because you never know how your smile will affect someone.
Smile because a smile will make you feel better.
Smile because things are better when you smile.

Who wants to...

Who wants to load up a couple trucks, and go with me to a demolished Interstate 35W bridge and give some hard working Firefighters, Police Officers, and other Rescue Workers a much needed and reserved break?
