April 13 How itSometimes people ask me how I can stand being a EMT, wth all the bad calls, and all the training to keep my certifaction up. A lot of the time its hard to give them a fair answer. I could give them the usuall see through answer that they buy, the "Im doing it to serve my commuity," but what is the real reason we do this? Is it because we are all crazy? Is it because we have no life? Is it because we have too much time on our hands? We dont do it for the money, because most cities garbagemen get paid better than almost all Paramedics. We dont do it for the glory, because theres a lot of times we dont get thanked. If we are not doing this for pay or glory, why are we doing it? We see things that most people dont see. We see people in their worst moments, when they have done something real stupid, or other reasons. We also reach out to them when other people dont want to. We go to the old lady's house down the street to take her somewhere, and we make her smile because we are smiling while we treat her. That just makes her day, when a stranger smiles and visits with her when her own family wont stop and visit her. We bring life into the world, and we are also there when live passes from this world to the next. We see things that poeple choose not to see, and go places people dont want to go. Some of us are volenteers, and work a regular job that lets us leave to go on calls. People wont recognise us on the street unless we are with the Ambulance or Fire Truck. So, how do we do it? The only way that can be answered is by looking into our hearts and answering it apporately. Each person has their own answer, and each answer is different. And each answer is perfect in its own right. January 21 this is...this is my life.
i wake up, i go to work, i come home, i go to sleep. i do the same thing day in and day out. i answer the phone at work, i go everywhere for the service calls, i do everything. i work, and work, and work, and do i get a break? not really. my brothers can come and go as they please it seems, but there almost has to be an act of congress for me to have a day off.
im tires, im sore, i dislike my job, and am just not happy overall. September 16 what its likeUntil you are a Firefighter/EMT, you can never know what it’s like to be a Firefighter/EMT. Movies are not accurate; the news media does not cover it right. Being a Firefighter/EMT is more than being at the station for meetings. It is more than waiting for the tones to drop. It is a brotherhood. A brotherhood that reaches worldwide. One can never truly know the joy, the pain, the good times, the bad times, and the sorrow that is part of being a Firefighter/EMT unless they become a Firefighter/EMT. The things that you see that shock everyone else are things that are everyday things for us. We go to places that are dirty, scary, down right nasty, and dangerous. We go into places that normal everyday people avoid going into. How many people do you know who would go into a building that is unsafe because there is someone hurt in that building? We go into buildings that are on fire. We go into buildings that have collapsed. We go into holes in the ground, and trenches also. We are contortionists. We can twist our way into wrecked cars and tight spaces.
You can see us on the street and not realize that we are a Firefighter/EMT. We go to the store, to the movies, to the beach just like everyone else. The only way you can tell is when the call comes in. We drop everything to go on the call. We may be in the middle of Christmas Dinner, or a family members birthday party, or even in the middle of sleeping.
Some of us are Full Time Firefighter/EMT’s, others are Volunteer Firefighter/EMT’s. Weather you are paid or volunteer, its more than just a job. It’s a calling. It’s in your heart, soul, and your blood. August 28 smiles.Smile
this came to me today after a conversation with a friend.
Smile when the day is long.
Smile when nothing goes your way.
Smile when it feels like everyone hates you.
Smile when nothing works right.
Smile when everyone else is frowning.
Smile because you never know how your smile will affect someone.
Smile because a smile will make you feel better.
Smile because things are better when you smile. August 03 Who wants to... Who wants to load up a couple trucks, and go with me to a demolished Interstate 35W bridge and give some hard working Firefighters, Police Officers, and other Rescue Workers a much needed and reserved break? August 01 owie? you ever wake up so sore that you think you might have fallen asleep in a running dryer? all i can say about it is owie. not a good feeling. only nice part about it is at least your warm, but the constant moving and then the pain when you finally decided to get out of bed. prolly wouldnt have happened if i had a good looking female in bed with me.
oh well. on to another night of tossing, turning, and feeling like death warmed over in the morning. i hate it. it will go away sometime... July 11 early? For those of you who are like me, and are not aware that 4 o'clock comes twice a day, it does.
i will be finding that out in the morning.
Night. June 26 sticksWhy is it that i always get the short end of the stick, or the shit end of the stick?
It feels like im the one that everyone turns to, but as soon as i need someone OR if something good happens to me, everyone dissappears.
Thats right, everyone fucking DISSAPPEARS!
Please, quit dissappearing. Its getting really annoying. much more of this, and i am going to dissappear.
And getting "stood up." If you cant see me when you say you are, tell me. just say you cant do it. Dont give me a lame ass excuse.
just tell me your sorry (if you are,) and tell me you cant.
Dont feed me a line of Bullshit. Dont give me excuses. If you forgot, say so dammit!
June 14 I live my life.I go to work. I go home. I ride shotgun in a city patrol car. I live my life MY WAY! I dont care what everyone else thinks. They dont care. If they dont care, they can go fuck themselves for all i care.
Now those who do care, I hold them close. They are my True Friends. They are the ones who understand. The ones who know.
Some dont understand. Some do. Hold onto those who do understand. Fire Safety 101Learning to use a fire extinguisher and buying the right kind are two of the most important decisions you can make in ensuring your home or business is safe from fire. What to Get...
Small fires can be very dangerous and you should always be certain that you will not endanger yourself or others when attempting to put out a small fire. For this reason, when a fire is discovered:
How to Use Your Extinguisher... PULL the pin near the handle of the extinguisher. This will allow you to discharge the extinguisher. AIM the extinguisher at the base, or bottom, of the fire. If you aim at the flames (which is frequently the temptation), the extinguishing agent will fly right through and do no good. You want to hit the fuel. SQEEZE the lever located on the handle. This depresses a button that releases the pressurized extinguishing agent in the extinguisher. ……..THEN LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY AND SEEK HELP!
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EXTINGUISH FIRE IF YOU CANNOT DO IT SAFELY! May 13 Mothers DayThis is for my mom, and my adopted moms, my friends who are moms or mom-to-be, and all the moms in the world.
For giving birth to us, for kissing our boo-boos, and cleaning our owies.
For giving your time to take us places, going to all the sports/plays/programs.
For not pulling your hair out the first time we got to drive.
For pulling your hair out when we were late getting home.
For bending over backwards to help us.
For countless meals, friends coming over, and dealing with the annoying friends.
For always being there for us, espically when we push you away.
For Loving me.
Happy Mothers Day. May 06 another year...where do the years go? it seems like just yesterday i was going through emt class. yesterday just turned out to be six years ago as of today. it is amazing how things change from year to year, and how some things stay the same too. the good times, the bad times, they are all there.
looking back on this last year of my life, there have been good things that have happened to me, bad things that have happened, and of course, the strange things that happen to everyone. I have made quite a few friends that i can never replace. i have found some old friends, i have forgotten some people that i will never see again. i have gotten new toys, more certifactions, more stuff, and the same amount of time to do it in. some things change, some things stay the same.
may my 24th year treat me as well as my 23rd year did.
oh, if its not obvious, today is my birthday. April 25 whats this life for? What is this life for? Whats it needed for? What do you do when it seems like all you do is the same old stuff every day? Where do you go when it feels like you have nowhere to go?
What is this life for? April 12 Who I AmWho am I?
I am who I am. there is no other explaination for it. I am a guy, who does regular things for a good majority of his day. I am a guy, who does the things that most people wont do. I am the guy woh runs to buildings that people are running away from. I am the guy who runs the hose that is protecting someone elses house. I am the guy who will go into places that people say are hopeless, because i can hear a person making noises. I am the guy who goes to peoples homes in their times of need and helps them. I am the guy who does a job that it is needed, but is not always noticed. I am the guy who does the classes to learn more to be able to help others more.
I am a Firefighter/EMT.
I am who I am, and I wouldnt change a thing. April 07 brothersWhat is a brother?
A brother is someone who sticks with you through everything.
A brother is someone who knows whats wrong by just looking at you.
A brother is someone who is beside you puking their guts out with you when your drunk.
A brother is someone who is beside you in the county jail sayin "that was freakin awesome"
A brother is someone who knows you better than you know yourself.
A brother may be a guy, girl, black, white. It dont matter.
A brother is a brother. whyWhy?
People ask why we are Firefighters. Who do we do it? Are we closet contorl freaks? Adreanline junkies? Tender hearted people who care about others?
I think we do it because it is a combination of both.Because of who we are. Because of who we are, we are able to do things and go places most would never do and go to. We are able to drop everything, leave our family and friends, be gone for any length of time, and to what we do with our brothers. Yes, we know the risks, the unknowns, but they dont stop us. We do our job, until it is complete, so others may live, so property is saved, but most of all, that everyone who is involved goes home safe.
This we do, That others may live.
cwl 4-7-07 April 06 another scribble...Listen! Dont you hear it? The sounds of chaos, and the harmony amongst the chaos. The sounds of Pumps moving water, sounds of ladder outriggers going out, sounds of water rushing out of hoses and nozzles, sounds of ladders going up. Raidos asking "where do you need us?" Fire cracking in the background. The sound of Chaos. The sound of crews working together. The sound of Harmony. cwl 4-6-07 scribble...Firefighting is not a job. We firefighters dont do this for the money, glory, honor or fame. If you think that is our reason for doing things normal people dont do, or go places they would run away from, think again. We do this because it's in our blood. We do this for the good of our fellow man. We do this because its in our hearts and souls to do the job. We go when we are called, because someone needs us. We drop everything, leave our loved ones, and go because a stranger called for us. We have our good days, we have our bad days. We stick together, because we are brothers. We do our duty together, we train together, We are a Family. This is not a job. This is a calling. This is a calling heard from deep in your soul. You cant run from it. You cant escape it. It is in you. cwl. 4-5-07 Bout Time...Ok, so its about time i get one of these things.
